About

Walk the Canal

This is the second year we have run this event. It was first run in 2023 and we raised over £3,300 for Blood Bikes Wales in May of that year. The event is modelled on a similar event organised by the Rotary Club of Monmouth, in conjunction with Chepstow and Ross on Wye Rotary Clubs known as Walk The Wye which raises funds for the Velindre Breast Cancer Research Team in Cardiff.

The inspiration for Walk the Wye and Walk the Canal came from the annual In the Pink Walks along the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal which were run for many years prior to Covid, and which raised over one million pounds for Velindre Breast Cancer.

For the 2024 Walk the Canal Event, 75% of the funds raised will be donated to Cancer Research Wales, and 25% will go to other charities supported by the Rotary Clubs of Abergavenny, Crickhowell, Cwmbran Vale, Henllys and Pontypool, split equally between the five clubs.

Cancer Research Wales

Our vision is a Wales united against cancer through world-class research.

Since 1966, our pioneering research has been saving lives, right here in Wales. Almost 60 years of research has contributed to vast improvements in cancer services and better outcomes for countless people. We are working to make sure the people of Wales do not have to accept cancer as a life-threatening disease. We do this by supporting the best cancer researchers and clinicians to make discoveries which will transform lives, because research is in our DNA.

Rotary

Abergavenny, Crickhowell, Cwmbran Vale, Henllys, and Pontypool Rotary Clubs are affiliated to the Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland organisation. This consists of more than 40,000 men and women who, as members of over 1,500 Rotary clubs, volunteer their time, talents, professional skills, and energy to improving the lives of people in their local communities and others around the world.

Rotarians are people of action and enjoy the opportunity to give something back, to give hope to those less fortunate and to make lives worthwhile and fulfilled.

Rotary is one of the world’s leading membership and humanitarian service organisations, with 1.2 million members globally and 33,000 Clubs

Through membership of their local club, individuals volunteer on community and humanitarian projects which make a difference locally, nationally and globally.

Rotary members are determined to tackle the world’s biggest issues, including promoting peace, fighting disease, supporting education and so much more.

Rotary was formed as a networking organisation and this still plays a part in Rotary life today. Rotary provides the opportunity to expand personal and professional circles, meet new people and make lasting friendships, all while having fun in the process.
